If you can’t make it, we’d love your thoughts through this 3-minute survey: forms.gle/MKPuadyTQmWHYCjD6

The intense level of public interest in transportation can make providing expert advice fraught with difficulty. The Transportation Group is here to lighten the load on your shoulders as the voice of the profession.

Let us know what burdens you are carrying, and what events, submissions and guidance you would like from us! For example, we’re currently developing a set of Transportation Group Positions for you to refer to in your work – a bit like Engineering New Zealand’s climate change position statement.

We are fortunate to have two well-connected and inspiring guest speakers to get the ball rolling:

  • Thomas Nash, Transport Committee Chair, Greater Wellington Regional Council

Thomas has 20 years’ experience as an organiser, strategist, advocate and negotiator, including a leading role in the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize-winning International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons – which must be familiar territory when talking road space reallocation and climate transition. He came back to Aotearoa in 2017, has been an elected councillor for four years, is committed to economic, social and environmental justice, and lives in Pōneke with his partner and young child.

Adam designed his first raised pedestrian crossing many years ago, and carries thought leadership and expert technical advice into the halls of power. How does he survive? What would he say to transport professionals about the state of the profession and what we can do as it grows beyond its 20th century roots?

Event Schedule:

  • 5:15pm: Arrival time
  • 5:30pm-6:00pm: Speakers
  • 6:00pm-7:00pm: Share your challenges on post-it notes or verbally, along with networking over drinks and nibbles

If you can’t attend, we still want to hear from you! Let us know if we’re on the right track by filling in this 3-minute survey now: forms.gle/MKPuadyTQmWHYCjD6

Lunch time talks – Central branch

The Transportation Group Central Branch would like to invite our members to attend “Lunch Time Talks” to enjoy some kai and presentations about urban mobility and career development this November!

Register to attend here: https://www.engineeringnz.org/courses-events/event/lunch-time-talks-central-branch/

At this event you will hear from our speakers Daniel Cooper (WSP) and Josephine Draper (Abley) on the projects they have been involved in over the past year, and the Transport Planning Professional route to accreditation in New Zealand.

Daniel Cooper will share his experience working on projects which evaluate the Government Policy Statement on Land Transport in terms of its focus on mode shift, and benchmarking urban mobility for Waka Kotahi’s Sustainable Urban Mobility project and community engagement work for Hutt City Council’s Integrated Transport Strategy.

Josephine Draper has recently gained the Transport Planning Professional (TPP) Qualification Aotearoa viaTransport Planning Society (TPS) New Zealand. The recently formed Aotearoa branch of the UK Transport Planning Society hopes to provide a route to qualification for Transport Planning professionals in New Zealand, and facilitates, develops and promotes best practice and innovation in transport planning. Jo will talk through her experience and the different routes to qualification.

Tea/Coffee and a light lunch will be provided. The event has been planned to allow for some networking after the presentations; we encourage everyone to stay and catch up with old colleagues and meet some new Transportation Group members.

If you (or someone you know) have worked on something interesting recently, we would love the chance to share this with members – please email Githmi.Amarasekera@wsp.com to express interest/suggest a speaker for a slot to share at a future lunch time talks session.

Rethinking Transport Models: a panel on creating the future

Join Central Branch for a thought-provoking panel discussion on how transport models shape our cities and infrastructure – and their role in an increasingly uncertain world. Modellers and non-modellers are welcome – this event is for everyone.

Date: Wednesday 6 November
Time: 12 – 1pm
Venue: Two/FiftySeven, 2/57 Willis Street, Wellington

Hear from our experts as branch chair Peter Cockrem hosts a panel with:

  • Nadine Dodge, Principal Economist at the Infrastructure Commission Te Waihanga
  • Vida Christeller, Manager City Design at Wellington City Council
  • Andrew Ford, Team Leader Data & Analysis at Greater Wellington Regional Council
  • Tobie Pretorius, Principal Transport Planner at Tonkin + Taylor

Our expert panel will explore:

  • the nature of models: we all have ideas about cause and effect
  • “what if” modelling: the limitations of decision-making based on models of incremental change
  • “how can we” modelling: using the strengths of models to create a better future in an increasingly uncertain world

Don’t miss this opportunity to network with your peers and engage in a critical conversation.

Who should attend:

  • Transport professionals
  • Urban planners
  • Policymakers
  • Anyone interested in how ideas and institutions shape urban outcomes

Tea, coffee and nibbles provided.

To access the venue, Two/Fifty-Seven, find Unity Books on Willis Street. Just to the right of Unity Books are glass doors to a corridor connecting through to Victoria Street. Use the lifts halfway along the corridor and press 2 for Level 2.
