Transportation Group are pleased to present this event to showcase local speakers’ conference presentations to our local Canterbury branch members, who may not have been able to attend the recent May conference held in Tauranga. The conference theme was ‘Caring for the People’.
We’re fortunate to have several local speakers to pick from, including some award winners – so another local speaker event is planned for late June to show off more presentations!

Presentations will last approximately an hour, followed by audience questions and discussion.

This interactive training workshop focuses on advanced intersection design issues for cycling facilities, particularly around signalised intersections and roundabouts. Participants receive a series of introductory presentations and then work in groups on four real-life site problems. Participants should have either previously undertaken the introductory cycle planning/design course (or equivalent) or have sufficient previous work experience in cycle facility projects – registration info at https://viastrada.nz/cycling-training

Transport Successes and Canterbury AGM

The Transportation Group is pleased to present this upcoming national event with speakers Glenn Lyons (CIHT president, Professor of Future Mobility at UWE Bristol, Mott MacDonald) and Tim Cheeseborough (Senior Transport Planner, Christchurch City Council).

• Glenn will speak about successful applications of adopting a ‘Decide and Provide’ transport planning approach and Triple Access Planning.
• Tim will speak to the success of Christchurch’s post-earthquake ‘An Accessible City – Christchurch Central City Recovery Plan’ transport planning, noteworthy transport outcomes, and the lessons from the journey – which was not straightforward!

This event will aim to sharing inspiring examples of long-term transport planning approaches and remind us of the successes we’ve had so far.

Glenn is the Mott MacDonald Professor of Future Mobility at University of the West of England (UWE) Bristol. The appointment bridges between academia and practice and Glenn divides his time between the university and Mott MacDonald (on secondment). At a time of significance for the transport sector, the position aims to co-develop and extend transport expertise in relation to understanding and responding to a changing and uncertain mobility landscape, which is shaped by technological possibilities and societal needs and preferences. Glenn was also formerly the Professor of Transport and Society at UWE Bristol and was the Founder of the Centre for Transport & Society. Glenn has worked closely with Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) and its members to challenge traditional thinking on how we plan transport interventions. Glenn was appointed by CIHT in 2015 to undertake the CIHT FUTURES study; his report and further work following the study has informed transport policy across the world.

Tim was a member of the Christchurch City Council team charged with preparing the post – earthquakes recovery plan for the central city back in 2011. Following the publication of the Christchurch Central Recovery Plan in 2012, he subsequently worked alongside the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA), Ōtākaro Ltd (the Crown delivery agency), Regenerate Christchurch and Development Christchurch Limited on many of the central city recovery programmes and their transport and access needs. The role has seen Tim get involved in many of the key Crown and Council led anchor project teams across the central city, as well as some of the largest third party led developments. As he moves towards the retirement door, he’ll share some thoughts about the central city’s recovery and regeneration over the last 14 years, largely from a transport perspective, with quite a few images of how things did look, compared with how they do now.
